Movie Review: “50/50″ (English)

How will you react when your life is on good side, you have a good job, a person with whom you are in a relationship and everything is happy around you and you are told you got cancer? If I tell you this movie is inspired by a true story of a guy who is diagnosed with a cancer then you probably will think that, oh again a movie on cancer and a sad journey that would be & obviously a sad end.

But no, despite movie being on a serious medical topic, the makers have really stepped up by giving it a comedy touch and also shows the positive, strong side of a guy Adam, who is 27 year old having a good job, is in a relationship with his girlfriend and one fine day he comes to know that he has a rare form of spinal cancer. He learns from the internet that the survival chances are 50/50. This movie showcases on how this guy, his close friend, mother & a young therapist at the cancer center stands firm and decides to battle it up with the cancer despite some people (including his girlfriend) around him change their perspective against him and he learns what and who are the important things in the life.

This movie indeed will make you laugh at a certain point and also it will make you cry. It takes something so serious and so taboo to laugh at and makes it a comedy and a drama. And the climax indeed doesn’t ends on a sad note. The post effect of the movie truly will inspire you and give another positive side of looking at the life when its going through thin phases.

Mom says “Coffee drinking is a fad”

Few months back I switched from tea to coffee and got addicted. The post related to it is here. Since that day my Mom always have been taunting me that “You don’t have to switch to coffee permanently, you used to drink tea regularly. Coffee drinking once a while is okay but daily, its just for fashion huh.” Maybe she reacts like this because I am kinda too addicted to Coffee now or maybe because I got some different coffee mugs specially to enjoy drinking.

These are the coffee mugs I bought.

When my Mom saw these mugs, she was like “Now what you have got? Why you want these mugs? You cannot have your so called coffee from the tea cups we have? And I was like, its better to stay quiet as it will be better for both. One day I asked Mom that why you feel coffee drinking is a fad? She came up with these answers:

  1. Tea has many positive after effects. It refreshes our mind & has many health benefits.
  2. Tea has less caffeine than coffee.
  3. As compared to coffee, tea is less expensive. (I agree to this point).
  4. Once you are addicted to coffee, you wont be settling with just one brand. You will start including various coffee in your stock. (She is damn right on this too as I started having Nescafe Classic, then got my hands on Nescafe Gold, Cafe Coffee Day coffee packs, Bru Gold, Bru Exotica Colombia. It happens like every time my stock gets over, I go to the mall to grab new coffee to try).
  5. Now that the mall is mentioned, she says Tea we get in local grocery store too. But then you want your premium coffees to try which you specially go to the hyper market/ malls to buy. Pretty fashionable huh.
  6. You always want to visit Cafe Coffee Day, Barista, Costa Coffee to try on new coffee delights when you already have your coffee stock at home.

Now what to say? Well, Mom’s are always right but still this coffee addiction is something I wont be able to eliminate from my blood.

Movie Review: “Shala” (Marathi)

Movie Review: "Shala" (Marathi)

This movie “Shala” (School) is adapted from the novel “Shala” written by Milind Bokil & is set in 1970′s on the backdrop of rural area school incidents or say the school life. The story revolves round the school & the daily school life of the four friends. It also has a love story touch to it. Now, not the love story as we see in matured age but that teenage age where in the kids hardly know about what LOVE is but has a lot of innocence in them.

The rural background appeals a lot in the movie. Those village roads, farms, early morning view where in smoke emerges from the rooftop of the village houses due to water being boiled for bathing purpose. Such backdrop gives an added look to the movie. The lead pair Anshuman Joshi & Ketaki Mategaonkar are so very natural in their performance and the innocence is clearly seen. Not just them, the whole characterization & casting is perfect. The background music is soothing.

This is a movie which takes us to our very school days where in how we used to play pranks in school, or had crush on fellow classmate or even teacher or sir. The movie also shows that the kids are so busy in their school activities with dedication that they are unknowingly reminded about the future hurdles after school and the life ahead. If you want to revisit your school days, this movie is a must watch.

“Criminal Minds” The only series that got me that addicted after “Lie to Me”

Those who know me, must have known that I was so very much addicted to the “Lie to Me” series. This post of mine will say it all. After that series, I have been following many series like “90210″, “Dexter”, “Bones”, “Fringe”, “Hustle”, “Leverage”, “Master Chef Australia”, “The Big Bang Theory”, House MD”, “Criminal Minds” etc. But I must say that the only series got me that addicted after “Lie to Me” is “Criminal Minds“.

I had watched the pilot episode of “Criminal Minds” on recommendation of many people on Twitter but that time was busy with “Lie to Me”. The pilot episode as always blows us as that’s the way the series makers make to gain interest but with “Criminal Minds”, every episode has its own grip. The series is about a team of profilers from FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) who helps in catching the criminals by studying & generating the criminal profiles based on their crimes.

No wonder it has its own charm and grip which allows the viewer to stay focused. It also helps to judge people in various way in our daily life by just watching their actions, reactions. The interesting thing about it is that unity among the team and the passion to solve crimes is shown really well.

And yes I also nowadays end up judging people by their actions, reactions, expressions. Now who to blame, me or the series, in a good way?

Movies, burger & fries always going to stay special

Still remember those days during final year of Diploma in Applied Arts in L.S. Raheja Institute of Art when I came across a new friend and we instantly got clicked. Thanks to the interests we shared in common, movies & fast food. Our college started and we started to watch one movie on every weekend and the movie theatre we always used to pick where McDonalds was near by. So either pre-movie or post-movie we used to grab the meal at McDonalds and sit for many hours.

Later as days passed by, we started to watch more than one movie back-to-back. We also registered for the Film Festival that year and all 7 days we used to start in morning to reach to the venue and be back at home in night. We both staying at two opposite sides of the city, we always used to meet at the central point so it would be easier for both of us to commute.

We also had made a list of the movies we had seen in that year and the count almost had reached 78.

Once his parents went out station so I went to his house to stay for 2 days and his parents called and asked him “How is your movies, burger & fries going on?”

Coffee addiction & am loving it

I admit I am/ was a tea person. And tea consumption was twice on daily basis. But it doesn’t meant that was not drinking coffee at all. I used to consume coffee only when I used to visit the coffee shops like Cafe Coffee Day or Barista. And always it has to be the Cappuccino.

Recently I had been to our holiday home just in other city called Pune. And out of the blue one morning, I felt why not drink coffee instead of tea. So I made a strong coffee for myself along with a bread toast. And that was Nescafe Classic. And I simply loved it. What I loved the most was the kick from the caffeine dose from the coffee.

And hence from that day I started consuming coffee twice daily. Myself coming from a tea addict family, when I told my Mom that I wont be drinking tea anymore and will be consuming coffee, she was like jaw-dropped. First thing she asked me “Why all of the sudden change?”. Well its just like that I replied. And am glad that I get to make coffee myself.

Hence, it has been the start of the addiction which am loving it to the core.

Got addicted to “Lie to Me” series

To be honest, nowadays we have many options to what to watch as so many channels and so many series are coming up. Unfortunately I am not that lucky to get my share of TV during my spare time. Reason? It’s because during my spare time which is mostly post 9 PM, parents have their own daily series schedule to maintain. One day I was just surfing the channels and came across the promo of “Lie to Me” series on Star World which was starting soon. I didn’t gave it much importance as I knew that I won’t be able to watch as the time will clash with my parents schedule. As days passed by, I saw many peeps were talking about this series and how brilliant it is. I realized that the series has already started and Season 1 was almost complete. But we are fortunate enough that we have other sources from which we can download the series. I wasn’t still keen but decided to at least download the pilot episode and give it a try. I downloaded the first episode and it was around 11 PM I managed to watch it. I was totally blown away with it and was not able to digest that such brilliant series can be possible and the makers have done it. I am very choosy when it comes to series, movies, books and music.

After first episode I used to download 2-3 episodes daily and mostly at night I used to watch it. On the weekends I used to watch 4-5 episodes back to back as I wanted to cope with the current telecast episode. But found out that also season 2 is available so I gave a shot and downloaded complete Season 2 and managed to go ahead of what was being telecast. For India, it was just Season 1-2 was scheduled. So who cares? Am way too ahead like many others who took ample benefit of the sources we have today online and am now going right along with what is being aired in US. I must say the concept the makers have came up, is unique. More the story, characterization and casting steal the show. Actor Tim Roth tears apart. I am just praying to God that our Indian production houses won’t get inspired from the original series and come up with cheesy title and ditto concept.

The series “Lie to Me” teaches a lot about human facial expressions and actions and no wonder we indirectly start to check if the person we are talking to is telling the truth or lies. An incident happened, where I was at KFC (Hiranandani Powai) and after taking the parcel I had to get out of the vicious circle of that area as that area is huge. So I boarded the rickshaw and realized that after 5-7 minutes also am not on the main road. The fact was that rickshaw driver was fooling me and was showing me all the possible turns that locality had, even I was not interested. I saw that he was watching me from his mirror and enjoying it by slight smile. From this I came to know that he was taking me for granted. And must say that Google Maps on my Android came to the rescue and via maps I was able to strongly tell the driver where to head in order to let me out of that area. Those who are fan of this series will totally agree with me that the series is addictive.
